| Shyira
is in the hills of Northwestern Rwanda, about 30 miles from the border
of Congo. It is a beautiful terrain of green, steep rolling hills,
fast flowing rivers, and dense population. Shyira sits on a small
but significant hill top, and is home to a large hospital, a church,
two primary (elementary) schools, two secondary schools (high schools)
and one trade school. Everyday patients
walk for hours to receive treatment at Shyira Hospital. Each Sunday
the church, which commands the peak of the hill, fills with the
singing voices of hundreds of men, women and children. Each day
the trade school’s classrooms and workshop bustle with activity.
Each morning the one road along the top of the hill is filled with
students hurrying to their respective schools. There is never a
cessation of activity in this community.
