Our professors
currently earn $10.50 for the 20 hour work week. Because these professors
are so crucial to our success, 50¢ an hour is an unacceptably
small salary. However, financial restrictions do not allow us to
pay more. Because of its recent formation and rapid expansion, CE.FO.PS
is under a significant financial burden. We lack important tools
for the practical aspect of several courses. Renovation of classrooms
is necessary as the school’s current enrollment exceeds existing
space. All available funds are spent on these urgent needs.
How can you help?
CE.FO.PS. is seeking individuals (or groups) who are interested
in sponsoring a professor by providing half of his or her monthly
salary. Sponsor responsibilities include a monthly donation of $30
and a commitment to at least 12 months of sponsorship.
Why sponsor professors and not students?
Professor sponsorship is, in effect, student sponsorship. By paying
our professors a reasonable salary, we can keep enrollment fees
affordable for students. Direct student sponsorship is complicated.
It is necessary to enforce academic standards, as with any scholarship
program. If a sponsored student fails to meet standards, choosing
a new recipient can be difficult. For example, should new recipients
be chosen on the basis of need or on the basis of academic performance?
In areas where poverty is a widespread issue (as it is in Shyira),
jealousy over school sponsorship can be a real problem. Additionally,
participants in many sponsorship programs are inevitably inundated
with annoying requests for money or gifts (cameras “for school”
are a popular choice).
Our professor sponsorship program, however, strives to eliminate
many of these difficulties. Professors are not allowed to write
letters for anything (except letters of thanks!) and we discourage
sponsors from sending gifts to individual professors.
Interested persons are encouraged to choose a professor based on
personal or group interests. CE.FO.PS professor positions include:
• 2 auto-mechanics professors
• 1 carpentry professor
• 1 masonry professor
• 1 sewing professor
• 2 electrical professors
• 2 English professors
• 2 French professors
By becoming a professor sponsor, you allow us to keep our enrollment
fees affordable for even the poorest of our students. Eleven of
our students are orphans from the Genocide of 1994 and the following
civil unrest. These students live with and care for their siblings,
and it is they who struggle most to meet enrollment fees. Without
outside help, we are several years away from being able to provide
our hard-working professors with a fair wage. As a sponsor, you
will receive updates on the development of the school, and the performance
of “your” professor and his/her students. If you are
interested in becoming a sponsor or have questions about our CE.FO.PS,
our professors, or this program, please email
us
