Shyira
Hospital is a mission hospital operated through the Rwandan Episcopal
Anglican Church. During the Genocide of 1994 and the wars following, the
hospital was completely looted and all equipment not stolen was
destroyed. There was sporadic fighting in the area until as late
1999, during which many were killed. In 2003, Dr Caleb and Dr Louise
King responded to the call to come here from South Carolina and
serve the local population who had gone ten years without a doctor
in the area. Shyira Hospital serves a surrounding rural population
of over 200,000, the vast majority of whom live in poverty. They have an active HIV service, offering preventive services and anti retroviral treatment.
In 2006, they were joined by Matthias and Iris Kohls, who serve with Christian Service International. Matthias is an Ob/Gyn and Iris is a teacher. Also on our staff are local doctors: Drs. Jean-luc, Donatien, and Theoneste. While the Kings have been at Shyira the staff has grown from 15 to 150. We seek to serve the physical as well as spiritual needs of the patients at our hospital.
